Our Basement Studio Tour 2022

After working on this space for two years, we finally converted our unfinished basement to an epic home studio!

Over the last two years we’ve been slowly building out our studio in the unfinished portion of our basement. We made video after video, and sort of made an unintentional build series on the channel. I’m not too sure why this space took so long. Maybe it was the couple of DIY projects we put off (which ended up only taking a weekend to complete), or the overthinking I did on how I could jam 5 sets in one space. Either way, it’s finally done and ready for you to see!

Below are images from our studio with a list of items in the space. We’ve also included some of the gear we use for making vids, so keep scrolling!

If you want to watch the full before and after room tour you can see it here:

The idea behind the studio was to mix finished, polished spaces with more utility open storage. On camera, corners of the space look finished as intended, but beyond the camera is a partially finished basement with open ceilings and concrete floors.

Our podcast set was designed to look like a living room on camera. The entire space is lit by Aputure B7C bulbs and a Godox VL150 light mounted to the ceiling. Podcast mics remain set-up here at all times for easy recording. We will make a separate post breaking down our podcast set-up in detail.

We reused Ikea dressers from our last apartment for small item storage, and ran some prints from our Cold Island series above. The entrance wall is clad in black painted OSB to match the Drone Factory. We’ve mounted six of our new BC Walnut Wall Hooks to hold our camera bags.

We decided not to finish this space out entirely for a couple of reasons. First off, we’re still renovating the rest of the house and want to maintain access to the open floor joists in case we want to run any new electrical or plumbing. Also, keeping it open gives us the ability to clamp lights to the floor joists above while maintaining a little extra head room.

The “Slat Wall” set is our main angle for filming information based YouTube videos on our channel. This was a DIY project and you can find the video here.

Our utility cart from CB2 holds our old Apple Display to keep our desk clear. When we want the Slat Wall set to feel more like an office we can move the monitor, freeing up the cart to move around the studio as needed. A small clothing rack holds our wardrobe, as we often bulk film videos. This also comes in handy when we’re doing brand partnerships where we need to showcase any clothing items or full outfits.

The opposite side of the room is what I consider to be the photography side. We mounted backdrops to the ceiling which allows us quick access to blank paper if we need to do a quick headshot or product photo. We’ve chosen three neutral papers here which can easily be swapped out with something different at any time.

The mobile studio wall acts as a room divider from the utility side of the basement, but also gives us the ability to customize the other side of the wall when working on individually branded one-off projects. You can find the build plans here.

And lastly, we’ve been rolling out with our new home decor line over the last few months. The second product was our walnut wall hooks and we’ve been DYING for a spot to hang a bunch of them. As mentioned above, six of our hooks line the black painted OSB wall as you enter the studio. They hold empty camera bags for easy access (plus they look friggin’ cool hung there in a grid).
