How To Hang A Picture

Usually store bought frames come with hanging hardware already installed on the back. Pop a nail in the wall and you're done. But what if you make your own art or stretch your own canvas and need to install the hardware yourselves? We recently did a little DIY art project for our living room which required us to do just that. We'll show you the technique we used, from back in the days when we used to print big ass canvases on our wide format printer! 

Materials:

D-rings

Screw driver

Picture wire

Rubber sticky bumpers

Level

Measuring tape

Hammer

Picture hook

Start by measuring where you want your hooks. The D-rings should be installed 1/3 down from the top of your frame, with 2/3 below the rings. The thickness of the edges of my frames were 3/4" so I measured 3/8" in from the edge for my screw placement.

Once your spot is marked, use a screw driver and attach the d-rings to the wood.

Once you have the d-rings installed on both sides of your picture frame, feed one side of your wire through the ring and tie a half knot. Take the excess and wrap it around the wire to secure it.

Feed the other end of the wire though the opposite ring, and tension the wire. Repeat the tying steps above.

We used push pins to attach our maps to the wood.

The general rule for hanging art is 57" from the floor to the centre of the frame, about eye height. To get your measurements accurate, measure from the floor and place your frame at 57" to the centre. Then mark the wall where the top of the frame lands on the wall. Pull the wire as if it was hanging on a nail, then measure from the wire's highest point to the top of the frame. Transfer this measurement to the wall, measuring down from the mark on the wall, this will be where your nail/hanging bracket will go.

You can add bumpers to the back of your frames to prevent scratching and sliding.
