Before and After: Our Tiny Apartment Kitchen

If you read our "making of" post, you already know how strange it us for us to be living in a space we can't really change. We were lucky that the kitchen was actually quite nice as this was a brand new rental. There wasn't a whole lot to do in this space other than decorate and build a table. Lets cut to it!  

Our apartment is quite small, but we didn't really realize how small it was until we started filling it up with furniture. We needed a dining table, but we wanted to create something that doubled as an island. Obviously we had to DIY it (more on that process in another post). We wanted our table to be an extension of our countertop so it had to be counter height and the stools had to fit completely underneath the table so we could stand at it to prepare food with ease. The table also had to be just the right size to comfortably seat four people, yet still be small enough to work around. We commissioned The Wood Shop to create our table top which is made out of reclaimed fir. For stools, we chose the Mackenzie Counter Stool by EQ3, compliments of SAM Design.

We chose a walnut stain for the reclaimed wood table top to tie in with the wood accents in the living room. The matte black table and stool legs play off the living room's wire frame coffee table too.

The tabletop is made from reclaimed fir slabs which The Wood Shop glued and sanded for us. We put one coat of stain and two coats of satin poly on top for protection. We will post up a full tutorial on how you can make this table in the coming weeks.

These cute oil and vinegar bottles from West Elm are a pretty way to store cooking supplies near the stove top. We also like to keep a bowl of lemons and limes nearby for cooking.

And of course, no well stocked kitchen of mine would be complete without my favourite Ginger Ale (which just so happens to match perfectly).
