DIY Minimalist Twig Wreath Inspired By Erika Rax

When we planned our move to Vancouver, I decided I wasn't going to decorate for the holidays, but as soon as September hit, I totally changed my mind. This year we are going with super colourful holiday decor indoors but keeping it minimalist out on the patio. I was SUPER inspired by Erika Rax's simple Copper and Twigs wreath and just had to try my hand at one. I put mine together with some leftover cedar and pine from my outdoor holiday planter, but I really liked how Erika used a hearty stick and incorporated copper and berries into hers. 

This project literally took me about 10 minutes and I love how simple it looks. Here is how I made mine, but you can have a look at Erika's tutorial to see how she put her's together.

Materials

Stick of any length

Greenery (I used cedar and pine)

Floral wire

Pliers

Pruning shears

Rope

Step 1

Cut your stick to length, this will be the base you build your wreath on. Essentially you are going to attach your greenery to the stick and then use rope for the other two sides of the wreath. I used two sprigs of cedar and two pieces of pine.

Step 2

Start with your largest piece of greenery and place it over the stick anyway you feel looks nice. I left the ends of my stick showing on either side to give room for my rope to tie on. Attach the greenery to the stick with floral wire, just as you would any other wreath.

Step 3

Layer on your other sprigs. Feel free to add additional sticks, different greenery, bulbs, pinecones, whatever you want. Wrap the floral wire around the greenery and the stick, making sure it is hidden under the leaves.

Trim excess wire with pliers.

Step 4

Once you are happy with how your stick looks, attach some rope or ribbon to either side of the stick making sure to double knot the ends so they don't come undone. 

Lay your wreath and rope out on a table and measure out how long you want your rope to be.

Step 5

Using a nail, 3M hook, or wreath hanger, hang your wreath by the tip of the triangle created by the rope.
